Tournaments

Postby OldMoatGames » Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:20 pm

We would love to have your feedback on tournaments. Do you like the way it works? Are there too many or too few turns?

At the moment we are discussing a way to make tournaments more relevant. One of the options we have is keeping a seasonal score for players who play tournaments, First place gets 100 points, second 50 etc. At the end of a season (could be a year) the player with the most points is the overall winner of the season. We would love to hear your opinions on how to add more relevance.

My first thought is that this might penalise people who do things like work, or have kids, etc... as people who don't will always win even with consistently bad rounds. It'll hardly be anything gamechanging, but in the interests of fairness, why not make it the highest AVERAGE score? This will reward players consistently playing well, while not unduly punishing people who simply don't have time.

Maybe just monthly scoreboards?

I think 10 turns is fine as it is for these. And the bragging rights should suffice really. Or maybe a T-Shirt.

I think 10 turns is not enough. It is not easy to get a score over 500 points within 10 turns. Certainly not if you have to take new letters because you can only make 2 or 3 letter words with the letters on the rack and you are almost sure that 2 or 3 new letters won't make it much better. As the tournament should be a real competition and not a combination of intelligence and luck, I prefer to increase the number of turns up to 25 or maybe even 50. That would eliminate or at least reduce the factor luck. With only 10 turn I don't play any tournament. That would certainly change if it would be at least 25 or, as I prefer, 50 turns.

First I thought that you should not start with monthly or seasonal winners of tournaments because you already have the top 10 tournament scorers in your overall statistics. However, looking at the daily statistics, I noticed that there are more and more very fanatic "SCRIVALERS". Scores are sky high. It shows that the game is very popular with the people who downloaded it. As most of the players will love the competition, the high overall scores may be a factor that reduces the fun and the motivation for newcomers. That again would plead for a weekly / monthly score for all statistics. It will add a lot of motivation for newcomers.

Firstly, tournaments are essential to this app's replayability, as I don't imagine myself coming back to check what new spots might be available to play on.

With that said, I read through the comments above and I disagree that the number of plays should be increased. This just seems unnecessary.

However I do like the idea of averaging the scores of multiple entries, thus appropriately penalizing those who have more time than others to obtain high scores. The only issue i see with that is the simplicity factor being reduced -- people love simple rules and why change it if only a few dislike it?

The only original idea I have to add a bit of "fun" is to randomnly highlight in red (or whatever) 1 letter per player's rack which gives a bonus for using that particular letter. This highlight would change each turn. This would add a strategic factor in which a player would have to focus on combinations involving that particular letter.

Any thoughts?

In general we decided to avoid using averages of points as a ranked metric since the risk is that you do really well at the beginning (maybe with a bit of luck) and it would be very difficult to maintain that average. We don't want players to feel that they can lower their scores by playing. On the other hand, players that have more time are able to get much higher scores because they can simply play more often. We are not sure yet how (or even if) we should change that in case of the tournament.

I like the tournament idea. We plan to do something with tournaments, we will post something on the forums when we are ready to discuss this :)
